Over easter (23 - 29th April 2011), myself and Rob will be walking the 95 miles of the West Highland Way and then going up Ben Nevis (weather permitting!) in memory of my dad, Brian Heaps, who sadly died of mesothelioma on 21st November 2010 and raising money for mesothelioma UK.

Brian loved the outdoors life and spent much of his free time walking in Cheshire, North Wales and The Lake District.  He played cricket for much of his life and achieved his first cricketing century aged 60, which had been a life time's ambition.

Brian was always extremely fit and healthy until the last year of his life, when the symtoms of late stage mesothelioma rapidly reduced his quality of life.  Brian struggled to do basic activities such as walk to the local shops; even walking upstairs became difficult.  He tired easily and battled to stay awake.  My dad kept hoping he was going to improve with further treatment; although there is no cure for this harsh disease.

Dad was exposed to asbestos while serving an electical engineering apprenticeship in Barrow shipyard during his teens.  This led to his suffering and untimely death aged 69 from mesothelioma.

We aim to raise awareness and funds for mesothelioma UK, who offer invaluable support and advice to sufferers and their families.
