Story
This time last year, we lost my father-in-law after a courageous fight against cancer. Some may remember Tony as a loving family man who devoted his whole life to loving, caring and planning for his loved ones. Others may remember him as a quiet man who always had a kind word or two to say to anyone he might meet. For me, he is still my gold standard of what it means to be someone who always cares about others before thinking of himself.
Farleigh was where Tony spent his last days. Although I am not qualified to comment on the medical care given to him during that time, Farleigh defined hospice care for me. Where else would allow a patient’s family, all 17 of us, toddlers and all, to lay out a full Christmas dinner by his bed? Where else would allow family members to stay overnight; and not only that but to feed them as well? … all these based entirely out of it’s own charitable trust without any charges to the patients.
Since becoming a runner four years ago, completing a marathon has become a major goal “when I am ready”. Just quite when I will be “ready” has always escaped me; until now. Attempting my first marathon, in remembrance of Tony, and for the benefit of Farleigh’s Hospice altogether seem to make perfect sense to me.
