Story
My husband Robin and I have recently adopted our greyhound, Annie, from the Retired Greyhound Trust. I was really touched by the devotion of the Trust to overcome people's misconceptions about greyhounds and the commitment they have to make sure that all retired dogs are given a chance for a new life in a home. The RGT was first established in 1975 and has homed some 45,000 dogs since then. Approximately 10,000 greyhounds retire from racing each year, typically between three and four years of age. Many never make the grade or retire at a much younger age as a result of minor injury.
The Trust has a healthy dog policy that includes neutering to stop indiscriminate breeding, a check on the teeth, vaccination, worming and defleaing. The health programme is very costly and any help, no matter how small, is very welcome and will ensure that the dogs get the best care while they are waiting for a new home. Unfortunately, some dogs are never homed so it is important that they are as comfortable as possible in the kennel environment.
Once you have owned a greyhound you cannot help but fall in love with them. They are such loving, loyal and gentle creatures who are always trying to please you.
Please give generously to this very worthy cause or better still, adopt a greyhound!
