78 Sqn is based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire and operates with Merlin Helicopters.

At present 'A' Flight are deployed on 1419 Flight at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan, the Merlins are part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) which is headed by NATO and is there to allow for the establishment of an Afghan Transitional administration.

The Charitys that we have chosen for the challenge are the RAF Association who is dedicated to supporting serving and former RAF personnel and their families and Southampton General Hospital Childrens Cardiology Unit where one of the engineers daughter recently underwent open heart surgery in March of this year.

The challenge itself is to run, cycle or row from Afghanistan to RAF Benson and back to Afghanistan and the finally return to RAF Benson (this is to be carried out in the gym). The total distance is 10,494 miles (16,887 km), 1 way it is 3,498 miles (5,629 km) it is 855 metres (2,736 ft) above sea level and is carried out in teperatures ranging from 42 - 48 degrees celcius (108 - 118 degrees fahrenheit). The engineers work 12 hour shifts for the duration of the 2 month deployment with no breaks, all the miles are obtained whilst off shift and each individuals personal goal is 214 miles (345 km) split between the 49 entrants. Each engineer has donated $10 to participate.

Thank you for your support from all of us on 'A' Flight 78 Sqn and help us reach our target of £3000.
