Hello!
My fundraising is going really well thankyou to everyone who has helped me so far, I am getting really excited...not long to go!!!
My name is Liana Tolland and I am 17 years old. I have been selected by Project Trust to volunteer in Uganda on a full 12 month gap year in 2010/11.
Project Trust was founded in 1967 as an educational charity on the Hebridean Isle of Coll in North West Scotland, and is widely respected as one of the most experienced and professional gap year organisations in Britain. Since then they have sent over 5,000 volunteers to volunteer overseas! Project Trust provides young people with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a community learning and understanding a new way of life overseas. All projects are vetted for their suitability for volunteers, and none deprive local people from work.
Volunteers have now gone to over fifty different countries volunteering in a variety of ways. For example, teaching English in china, working with children with Aids in South Africa, helping to run outward bound schools in Hong Kong, delivering babies in Jamaica and becoming the surrogate mother to an orphaned chimpanzee in Uganda.
I have always wanted to be involved in helping those less fortunate abroad and during my school time I have done various voluntary work, such as helping out at a local school nursery, helping lower school children in Drama and Science, also using my free time to help raise money for the sixth form. In Uganda I will be teaching and providing extra curricular activities. This will not only help those I will teach but will help me in building greater confidence and adding to my experiences that will take me through the rest of my life. Accomodation in Uganda is basic, with most projects are located in rural communities, and has an erratic supply of electricity and water. Myself and other volunteers in Uganda will cook local fare such as yams, sweet potatoes and groundnut stew.
I have to raise a sum of £4,830. I will be doing this in a variety of ways such as car boot sales, ticketed events, cake sales and sponsored events (and also gratefully receiving donations from generous visitors to this page!). I am also going to be working to save up to £1,000 of my own money to cover personal expenses while I am away. I will be funding my own vaccinations and visas prior to departure. All compulsary training undertaken for my gap year is my own expense too.
No donation is too small...and just giving is completely safe, simple and fast, with the money going directly to Project Trust. I am really grateful for your interest in supporting me on my journey, which is both fun and hard work at the same time.
If you wish to contact me and ask me any questions then feel free to email me at lil_marsbar@hotmail.co.uk or find me on facebook (quite regularly :-))
