Story
Earlier this year I had emergency eye surgery for a detached retina. Thanks to the swift response and expertise of the eye unit where I was treated I have regained the sight in my right eye. I'm still having problems with cataracts in my left eye but I know this will be sorted in due course with a relatively quick and easy operation. The experience of temporary sight loss made me appreciate how lucky I am to live in a country where we have access to free health care via the NHS. Thousands of people in developing countries don't have this privilege and as a result cataracts or a detached retina can lead to permanent blindness resulting in a loss of independence, income and an inability to care for their families. In the case of children these conditions can have a devastating impact on their future. These and other eye conditions are easily preventable and treatable with access to funding and the expertise that we take for granted in the UK. By donating to Sightsavers you are helping the charity to work in some of the world's poorest areas to prevent and treat eye conditions that would otherwise lead to permanent blindness.
All donations will go to the charity. We are totally self funding the trip.
