Dear All
Unfortunately I am unable to do the tandem hanglide as the 'other part' of the tandem was unable to take me. However, I am now partaking in a far harder project. I am going to lose a minimum of a stone by the end of September and would appreciate your sponsorship as I believe this charity is well worthy of support. I hope you agree. I will leave my original spiel on here just as proof that I was willing to give it a go. I did try an appeal on Radio Cornwall but no volunteers were forthcoming - methinks rumours of scars from previous escapades might have been leaked!!
I have signed up with slimming world so the process is regularly monitored and hope to come back to you a shadow of my former self.
I think, like most people, I have a healthy fear of heights but I try to conquer it by putting myself through various self imposed scenarios, like jumping off kerbs and progressing to jumping off a step. From there it's getting up a ladder one step higher per decade (I don't want to overdo it!). As a child I had little fear of falling because as I was nearer the ground it didn't hurt quite so much when I fell, add to this the fact that the healing process is a lot quicker when the skin is young and healthy and the limbs recover in double quick time.
I recently attended an open day at the Sport Centre at my place of work and looked at the various activities that were on offer to us, one of which was a Tandem Hang Glide. I might have considered learning to do it all by myself except for the fact that I never actually got the hang (pardon the pun) of kite flying, mine always managed to collapse and I always slumped home, sulking, with the tail between my legs.
Unfortunately I forgot to leave my 'Impetuous hat' in my office and when I reached the hang gliding stand my mind started ticking over (yes, I found it, the mind that always appears to stop working when I need it most). If I did this it would serve two purposes, on the one hand I could really test my resolve to conquer my fears and on the other I could raise money for a really deserving local charity.
A couple of friends of mine unfortunately had cause to use the charity Pehaligons Friends and when I saw the children chatting on the television on 'Children in Need' I was very touched by their ability to be able to discuss their situation with a maturity beyond their years, and their acceptance of what had happened as being a natural process in life. I was absolutely amazed by the simplicity of their views, these were young children who had just lost one of the most important people in their young lives and, with the help of dedicated professional staff, were able to not only accept this traumatic event but to help others in the same position to do the same. I remember David Penhaligon and what a wonderful man he was and cannot help but think that this charity is a perfect tribute to his memory.
Thank you very much for reading this introduction and if you are in a position to contribute towards this fund raising I will be most grateful and, if you should leave a contact email address I would like to send a personal message of thanks. If you wish to contact me my email address is lizybuff@hotmail.co.uk
