On 22nd July 2011 I will be attempting to complete the three national peaks. This consists of Scotland’s Ben Nevis at 4,409ft, England’s Scafell Pike at 3,208ft and Wales’s Snowdon at 3560ft – that’s climbing over 11,000 ft and cover 26 miles of rough terrain... and all this to be done in a weekend!   We have 11 enthusiastic volunteers each aiming to raise £100 each!.  So why are we attempting this – From the 29th August, myself and two friends Clare and Steve will be spending 4 weeks volunteering at the Walk in Centre Kenya. We will contributing to the many programs they run over there from :- Assisting teachers in delivering lessons Teaching basic English, science and maths to nursery and primary level children Lesson planning and preparation Providing companionship and care for the children in a ‘big brother’ or ‘big sister’ role Assisting them to get medical care as needed Reading to them and assisting with recreational activities and sports Cooking for and feeding the kids We are aiming to raise as much money and awareness of the Walk Centre Project. Please visit my JustGiving site for more details and to make a donation -    About the Walk Centre The Walk Centre is based in Nakuru, Kenya; an area of contrasts. While it is rich in wildlife and natural beauty it is also home to some of the poorest communities in the world.  The residents of the Hilton Slum reside on the edges of Nakuru’s local rubbish dump. The community experiences poor health, poverty and high levels of unemployment. The levels of unemployment have remained high and all government run schools require regular fees which are beyond the means of the locals.   The Walk Centre began in April 2005 in order to cater for the needs of the local Hilton Slum. Alex and Patricia Maina, both teachers by trade and respected members of the community, identified the needs of the slum and gave up their jobs to establish and run The Walk Centre.   The Walk Centre is a registered not-for-profit charity committed to helping the children and families of the Hilton slum.  The project provides the children with the basic human right to education, regular meals and emotional support. It also provides financial assistance to the locals to enable access to medical care, food and basic housing maintenance   Here's to making a difference :)
