The Linklaters team is walking the 40 mile "Walk the Thames" event on February 20th and 21st. The walk raises funds for London's free legal advice services that make such a difference to the lives of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in London. They prevent homelessness, reduce poverty and debt, challenge discrimination and combat exploitation. In particular, we shall be fundraising for the Mary Ward Legal Centre.
Mary Ward provides free legal services to individuals and groups who face financial and social exclusion. The Legal Centre specialises in debt and money advice, employment issues, housing problems and welfare benefits. More than 6,000 clients are helped every year.
With the recession there is an exponential demand for legal advice in all the areas Mary Ward provides and demand is outstripping its capacity to help. At the same time government funding has become ever more tight and the future of legal services provision is unpredictable and uncertain. They are in urgent need of additional funding to keep providing this much needed service.
