2010 Liverpool Women's 10km · 9 May 2010 ·
Hi everyone, in honour of our mum Patricia who passed away on 10th December 2009, we are doing the Women's Liverpool 10k charity run on Sunday 9th May.
Our mum was diagnosed in October with a rare type of cancer called Squamous Cell Carcinoma arising in a Dermoid cyst of the Ovary. As her cancer was so rare, there was not much information available to us and her own consultant had not treated anyone with it. There was only a handful of cases within the last 30 years for them to go by and these provided us with no statistics for her chance of treatment and recovery.
After an initial misdiagnosis 4 months before being admitted to hospital, by the time they found it, it was too late as her cancer had spread so much, and just 8 weeks after diagnosis, our mum passed away aged just 53 peacefully at home with our dad.
The charity we are running for is an excellent charity designed to draw together people with rare and less common cancers, thereby giving them a bigger collective voice to exact better services, and enabling them to support one another. Also to make health professionals aware of issues related to rarer cancers, such as the often slow diagnosis and the need for successful treatment and symptom control pathways to be shared. For more information on the charity please visit http://www.rarercancers.org.uk/
Emma, Danielle's friend and Debbie, our auntie are also joining us on our run to show their support so any donations from their sponsors can also be made through this site.
