My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving Page

So why I ask myself, would I want to put myself through this again!

  • I don’t like exercise
  • I certainly don’t do walking ……… normally

Although, I did torture myself a couple of years ago doing the Maggies Night Hike – 26.6 miles around London in the Dark and very nearly crippled myself in the process

  • Toenails came off on both feet
  • I had a blister on the back of my left heal within about 1 mile of the START
  • I walked like a 90 year old for a good while after the event

So you would have thought, lesson learned…………………. “Wrong-o”

My friend Sally, mentioned the walk in passing and I found myself saying “count me in – its only 50K”  I was assured by my friend that the Runneymead to Henley part of the walk was the most picturesque and that I would thoroughly enjoy myself.  So I have joined Team Persepolis for another challenging adventure.

So in my 50 year, I am walking 50K and I hope to complete in……………hours!!!!!!

Ok so that decision was made!

Now came the decision about who I wanted to raise funds for………….

The Polly Parrot charity is very close to my heart and also my workplace - raising funds to support the work that is being done on a capital level at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS FT to improve both our Paediatric Ward and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Within my role as a Specialist Midwife for Infant Feeding, I can spend many hours in both of these departments, caring for patients and supporting families who would undoubtedly be more relaxed in a “home from home” environment.

The current three year appeal has two main phases; the objective being to provide the best standard of paediatric facilities possible to support the high quality care that is currently being delivered. including both cancer and adolescent facilities but these will come at a significant cost!  The current target for the appeal is £250,000.

We want to be able to provide specialist equipment; sensory and electronic as well as high quality decoration in all our children’s facilities; the beneficiaries of our appeal will be the children and their parents who use the services. Polly funds those things that help make a child’s visit less traumatic for those who are staying whilst providing home from home comforts for the family and visitors.

Over the last few weeks I have met a couple of very special babies on our Neonatal Unit so part of me will be walking for Ella-Mae and Edward
