On 20 February 2010 I will be travelling to Tindouf in the SW Algerian Sahara to participate in the Sahara Marathon 2010. Before you all jump out of your skin in shock, I’ll admit that as I am a newcomer to running (before I gave up smoking in January 2009 I could barely run for a bus), I have actually only signed up for a half marathon (13 miles). My training as already begun and so far so good. This will be an immense personal challenge but with a hugely rewarding outcome.
All donations make it possible for Sandblast, a small UK charity to fulfill its mission to give a voice to the Saharawi people through the arts. Close to 200,000 have been refugees in the harsh Algerian desert, forgotten and dispossessed of their rights and homeland of Western Sahara for more than 33 years. Your contribution will go towards raising £50,000 to run month-long workshops in the refugee camps in music, dance and theatre and to set up a professional recording studio and radio station there. http://sandblast-arts.org
The actual run takes place on 22 February, during the week in Tindouf, I will be a guest of the Saharawi people and staying amongst them in their homes.
