Story
Loki Hostel is a large hostel set on the hillside of Cusco, Peru. The owners and workers are always trying to give back to the locals through volunteering and fundraising.
Now we are hoping to kick up the fundraising a step and make a real difference.
Loki is currently raising funds to support the MySmallHelp Projects in Peru. MSH believes that caring for the poorest people in the world is the joint responsibility of humankind. They aim to provide people living in poverty or with a disability with education and skills training in order to enable them to pursue their goals. It is MSH´s vision not to create a culture of dependency but to prepare the individuals they work with for their own, self-sustained lives.
MSH is providing support to 20 disabled children and their families in the area of Ollantaytambo and 19 children and their families in El Milagro, Trujillo. The children of these families did not before have access to an education, either out of economical reasons or because they suffer from a disability, which is a great stigma in these areas and makes it very difficult for them to get access to an adequate education.
MSH offers a school bus transport service for the disabled children in the area around Ollantaytambo, bringing them to and from the amazing Arco Iris School for special needs children in Urubamba. Also, MSH collected all the things the families need in a wish list,
aiming to give out the things most needed as fast as possible (some families do not even have mattresses to sleep on, and most of the disabled children in the area around Ollantaytambo urgently need medical care).
To help raise more awareness for the work MSH does, Loki´s bar manager Alan Cotter has agreed to wear a Spiderman suit for 6 full weeks, only taking it off to shower, for no longer than 30 minutes per day. He is almost three weeks into this challenge now and in one week is taking a trip home to Ireland, which means travelling through Cusco, Lima, Amsterdam and Cork airports in the suit before arriving home where he hopes to raise support for the cause.
Alan has visited most of the MSH children and projects in the Cus area getting to know the children he is raising money for better. For more information on his experiences during the days he spent with the organization, go to MSH´s blog:
