Story

Land End to John O’Groats – Cycle Ride

Having completed my first 50 mile training ride (have done lots of 20 mile rides!), and suffering from a mild case of sun stroke and extensive sun-burn, I feel I need to re-focus on why I am embarking on a 2 week cycle ride from Lands End to John O'Groats in August!

In July 2008 my mother, Janet White, sadly and unexpectedly passed away after suffering from Diabetes for 40 years, at the age of 47. This came as a massive shock to all our family and friends. Whilst we knew she had suffered in her battle with the illness, I am not sure any of us knew quite how much.

I decided (after a few beers) that I would like to raise some money for Diabetes UK as well as raise awareness of the illness. In an alcohol induced stupor, I declared that a cycle ride from Lands End to John O'Groats would be the best way of doing this, unfortunately I told too many people to back out! A good friend - Frazer Campbell, very kindly decided that he would like to join in with the cycle ride. We depart from Lands End on Saturday 21st August 2010, and aim to complete the ride in 2 weeks. Some people complete the ride in 10 days, however I have never been renowned for my physical fitness/sporting prowess!

I am aware that people are constantly asked for donations throughout the year - myself included! I would be extremely grateful for any donation, no matter how small! However, those of you who knew my mother would know that she would prefer a large one!

A bit about Diabetes UK:

"Diabetes UK is the largest organisation in the UK working for people with diabetes, funding research, campaigning and helping people live with the condition. Diabetes UK is aiming to invest £6 million in research in 2010.

There are currently over 2.6 million people with diabetes in the UK and there are more than half a million people with diabetes who have the condition and don’t know it

On average someone with insulin dependent diabetes has to administer 1456 injections a year, based on four injections a day for 52 weeks. This doesn’t include the daily and necessary blood glucose tests.”
