Story
Every year over 3 million babies die in their first month of life, and over a million on their first day.
In Vietnam, the neonatal (newborns) mortality rate is high. There is no newborn nurse training, and the critical shortage of trained nurses is a major factor in the newborn death rate remaining high.
Yet it takes just $700 to train a neonatal nurse.
So, I am cycling 500 kilometers over 4 days to bring British nursing expertise to a newborn care unit in central Vietnam by helping some extraordinary doctors and nurses fulfill their dream to give better care to every newborn.
I've taken up cycling in Vietnam, and I simply couldn’t pass up this opportunity to combine an amazing cycle ride with making a difference to thousands of new lives. Changing the life chances of newborns is not only inspirational - it should be a fundamental right that every baby, no matter where in the world they are born, receives the best possible care.
We can all play a role in ensuring that every child lives to celebrate his or her first birthday. Thank you for supporting my ride, and for playing a vital role in changing the life chances of newborns in Vietnam.
