Story

Hi guys!

As some of you may know, I'm running 10k for Scottish Autism on October 6th (2013). Having worked with various people across the specturm from different backgrounds and areas of the spectrum, I can truely say that this organisation do fantastic work and I truely believe they are worthy of any penny raised.

All the money given to Scottish Autism goes towards helping thousands of families across Scotland who have relatives accross the specturm and need support in living their day to day lives, as for some the spectrum can be really severe!

I've been asked a few times why I've chosen this charity, and here is why:

  • I work with a lot of autistic children through my voluntary work and often found it (and still do find it) difficult to understand their behaviours and why some of them responded better to communicating in one way but for others, not so much. Bassicaly, I didn't know really much about the specturm and I wanted to know more, because their behaviours were interesting and new to me.

Last year, I decided to study "Understanding Autism and the Spectrum" for an Open Uni course, mainly because I didn't know a lot about the spectrum and was intruiged to know more. I've spoken and heard stories from many families how having a son/daughter/brother/sister who is on the autistic specturm how difficult it can be for them growing up and the challanges society can have on their lives not only personally but in public too. Many of whom, always thanked Scottish Autism because of the great support they give!

Whenever I gave myself the new challenge in July to run 10k in the Great Scottish Run, I wanted to achieve a new personal goal but I wanted others to get something out of it also.
Scottish Autism aren't as well known for the work they do and I wanted to not go for obvious Charities who get masses of sums of money constantly. Speaking to various people and reading their website to make sure their work is just as amazing as I hear it is, I knew this would be the right charity to do it for.

They have been brilliant though. They emailed me as soon as Just Giving notified them about what I was doing and have sent me out a free Scottish Autism tshirt and vest for the run go wear (depending on the weather depends on the top!) and I could tell from their first email how appreciative they were.

  • It makes it better to know how supportive they are of not only me, but the many other runners who will be in Glasgow running, no matter the weather, raising money for their charity and it gives me just that little bit more motivation to not give up!

I'd be extremely appreciative of any donation you make (no matter how big or small!) and I promise to run the full 10k, no matter how much my legs hurt and I want to cry!

Many thanks for your support and help! :-)

Louise x
