SMA is a genetic disease that affects motor neurones. 1:40 of us is a carrier and in its most severe form children rarely live beyond 2 – making SMA the leading genetic cause of death in babies and toddlers. The SMA Trust is solely dedicated to funding research into a cure and treatments for SMA

<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.</span></span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">&nbsp;</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Freddie Sheffield has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type II.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>SMA is a genetically inherited neuromuscular condition resulting in decreased muscle strength throughout the body.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>This means that Freddie has a maximum of 10% of normal muscle strength and is a permanent wheelchair user.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">He has been at The Beacon for nearly 10 years and has recently undergone major surgery for scoliosis (curvature of the spine).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>He leads as normal a life at school as is possible but with obvious restrictions &ndash; he cannot play sport, take his jumper off, serve himself lunch or even pick up a pencil without the aid of an assistant or friend.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Freddie is involved this year in helping raising a total of &pound;2,000,000 as part of the charity&rsquo;s Momentum Adventure campaign.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We hope that many Beacon boys will be raising funds for the campaign by taking part in their own challenge on 7<sup>th</sup> July.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp;&nbsp;W</span>e are also organising a Gala evening on 2nd July&nbsp;when talented old boys, staff and parents will be performing.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">With your help we are confident that we will be able to raise significant funds as well as awareness of SMA.&nbsp;&nbsp; </span></span></p>
