Charcot-Marie-Tooth UK (formerly CMT United Kingdom) is the national support group for people affected by Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, aka Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy. We provide advice, support and information for people with the condition, family, carers and medical professionals.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My Name is Lucy, I'm 21 years old and I suffer from CMT (charcot-marie-tooth disease). I have set up this just giving page in memory of my dad,  to raise as much money as I can for research into CMT!

Daily tasks like walking, getting dressed and even opening a bottle of juice are everyday things that people take for granted. These simple tasks are hard for me  and others that suffer from CMT, and I want to help fund research into a cure so we can stop the pain and suffering that we go through everyday. I also want to raise money to help CMT UK support people like me, they are a fantastic charity!

I'm taking on a HUGE challenge of doing a sponsored walk and it would really mean a lot to me if you can help me out by donating!

Please help me raise some money, the smallest donations can make the biggest difference!

Thank you,

Lucy x

What is CMT?

CMT affects both motor and sensory nerves. (Motor nerves cause muscles to contract and control voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing.)  A typical feature includes weakness of the foot and lower leg muscles, which may result in foot drop and a high-stepped gait with frequent tripping or falls. Foot deformities, such as high arches are also characteristic due to weakness of the small muscles in the feet.

In addition, the lower legs may take on an "inverted champagne bottle" appearance due to the loss of muscle bulk. Later in the disease, weakness and muscle atrophy may occur in the hands, resulting in difficulty with carrying out fine motor skills (the coordination of small movements usually in the fingers, hands, wrists, feet, and tongue)
