Story

Hi everyone,

Thank you for visiting my page - hopefully this means you're going to make a lovely generous donation!

What I'm doing

Never one to ask people to do something I'm not prepared to do myself (ho ho!) I'm going to be abseiling 400 feet from the top of the National Lift Tower in Northampton on Saturday 4th February. This tower is thought to be the highest permanent abseil structure in the world and needless to say I'm going to be terrified stepping off the top! Skydiving didn't scare me (I could trust the science that keeps a parachute in the air) but abseiling with just a piece of coloured rope keeping me 400 feet from the ground... well it doesn't sound foolproof does it!

For those Northants-ites out there feel free to come, point and laugh - but remember to donate extra for the privilege!

Why am I doing it

As you know Alzheimer's Society is very dear to my heart - not just because I am lucky enough to work here and see the enormous difference we make to people with dementia and their families but also because my Gran has Alzheimer's disease.

Seeing someone you love go through the early, middle and now late stages of dementia sends you on a rollercoaster of emotions - if I visit and my Gran recognises me, smiles and gives me a hug I'm on top of the world. But when she looks at us blankly or worse mid-conversation suddenly crumples into tears for reasons not even she knows it breaks your heart. And I'm not even a carer - I'm just a granddaughter who visits. I can't imagine what life is like for the 750,000 people with dementia and those who care for them 247 around the UK.

Dementia isn't indestructible and life with dementia doesn't have to be a bad life - please make my abseil worthwhile and donate. The donation you make will make a big difference - enabling Alzheimer's Society to invest more in support for today and researching treatments and a cure for tomorrow.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for donating.
