My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On September 3rd, John Duncan and Lynn Calder will each attempt to conquer the Iron Monster.  The Iron Monster is an ultra distance event comprising over 43km (a marathon) of mainly off-road running followed by 73km (45 miles) of mixed terrain cycling.  According to the organisers – “Both distances are long and the extreme terrain (including multiple steep climbs over rough ground) and potentially adverse weather conditions combine to make the course even tougher.” – sounds appealing!

Many of you may be familiar with the Monster Challenge as a team event where the distance is split up into 8 legs.  But we’re proposing to each tackle the full distance solo - past results have shown that it takes roughly between eight and ten hours to complete the course.  If you want to read more about the course then have a look at - http://www.firstmonster.com/the-route/ - Eeeek!

So, now you all know that we like a challenge!  But this challenge is particularly daunting, which is why we have decided to try and raise a bit of dosh while we’re at it.  Neither of us often seek sponsorship for the ‘fun’ events that we do, and we won’t be doing the rounds again for another few years, so we’re hoping that you will dig deep for our chosen charity and help inspire us to keep going on the day.

We have been watching with great interest the work of the fundraising committee and the community of Aberdeen in trying to build a Maggie’s Cancer Care centre at Foresterhill Hospital.  Unfortunately, there are very few people who remain untouched in some way by this relentless disease and what we like about the concept of Maggie’s is that they are there for anyone affected by cancer whenever they need help – from being diagnosed or undergoing treatment, to post-treatment, recurrence, end of life or in bereavement.  But just as importantly, Maggie’s also welcomes family and friends, as they are often deeply affected by cancer too.  This year is the tenth anniversary of the loss of Lynn’s mum to cancer and we would love to mark that by raising as much as possible in support of this fantastic, local fundraising effort.

So please dig deep and spur us on to surpass our fundraising target of £10,000.  Please donate at our Just Giving page (www.justgiving.com/Lynn-Calder).

All funds raised via this web page will be ring-fenced for the Aberdeen Maggie’s centre.

Many thanks for your support.

Lynn and John.
