Story
Every 3 minutes someone develops dementia, a disease we cannot stop, cure or even slow down.
But dementia will not win.
Until the day we find a cure, Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Scotland will be there for everyone affected by dementia – but only with your help.
Just £21 funds an hour of one on one care by a Dementia Support Worker, a vital lifeline to anyone living with the diagnosis. Together, Hike it or Bike it could raise an incredible £500,000 which could give a staggering 23,810 hours of care.
Peter was diagnosed at 59. Dementia made him feel worthless and he lost all confidence – like the time he was stood in front of a cash machine trying to work out what it was and why he was there, and people around him were tutting and getting annoyed. Peter felt powerless and couldn’t go on knowing that his dementia was going to get worse. He didn’t know where to turn to. In desperation he decided to end his life by walking into the sea near his house in Blackpool.
But that’s not where Peter’s story ends. While Peter was putting his affairs in order, Elaine, an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Adviser, knocked on the door. They chatted for hours. Peter said “it was like someone had turned a light switch back on.” Elaine made him feel like he wasn’t in this alone and that he had so much life left to live for.
