We help homeless people in Cardiff to overcome homelessness and poverty

Story

I've been drawn to the the idea of walking the Camino for some time, and I've finally decided to give it a go. The walk from Leon to Santiago de Compostella should take me around 3-4 weeks. I don't intend rushing it, I want to enjoy the journey, meeting new people, seeing new sights, relaxing and enjoying the spiritual experience.

My partner, Alex, is Vice Chair of the YMCA Housing Association. They run the biggest homeless hostel in Wales, providing shelter and helping vulnerable people get their lives back together, as well as a clothing recycling operation which also provides the people they support with work experience. When he asked me to use my walk to help raise funds for them, I couldn't turn them down. I'll be staying in hostels on the walk, so there's a synergy there.

I've set a target of £10,000 for fundraising, but it's just a made up figure. They've had a lot more than that cut from their funding, so they need as much as you can give. It's not a competition. If we don't make the target, or even if we exceed it, that's not the point. Every penny you give will be supporting a worthwhile cause, and I'm achieving a personal goal. That's what's important.
