The MARS.Radio team from the University Campus Barnsley will be taking part in an Olympic Torch relay up the clock town of Barnsley town hall to raise money for Brain Tumour Research & Support across Yorkshire.

Olympic torch's historic journey into Barnsley Town Hall’s clock tower in the battle against brain cancer

An 8-year-old disabled boy who lost his Daddy to brain cancer, will be joining University Campus Barnsley’s Music and Radio Society, to boldly go where no charity fundraiser has ever gone before.

On 20th August 2012 at 10am, Jack Wilson will start a relay into Barnsley Town Hall’s clock tower, carrying the Olympic torch of legendary Brain Tumour Research (BTRS) fundraiser, Ian Meek, 42, who sadly also lost his life to the disease less than a week ago.

The journey will be repeated 99 times, by numerous participants and will finish with Jack's mother, Suzanne Wilson, completing the final run where it will be taken directly into the clock face.
The event, organised by University Campus Barnsley’s (UCB) Music and Radio Society’s Radio team, (MARS.Radio) in collaboration with Barnsley Council, hopes to raise thousands of pounds for Brain Tumour Research & Support in Yorkshire (BTRS).

It’s exactly one year since Daniel Wilson, 36, husband to Suzanne, and father to Jack, 8, and Christopher, 3, died following a lengthy and traumatic battle with brain cancer. The relay, which will be in his memory, is going to be physically challenging for Jack, because he struggles to climb stairs and has to take regular medication to control chronic pain caused from severe joint hypermobility syndrome, hypotonia and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Despite this, he is determined to make it into the tower. He said:

“I really want to do this for my Daddy. I miss him and wish I could see him again. If I do this he will be proud of me because it might stop somebody else’s Daddy from dying.”

Olympic flame bearer, Ian Meek, from Leeds was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer three years ago, but lived with a benign brain tumour for over 18 years. In his lifetime, he raised in excess of £100K in the fight against brain tumours, and as such he was given the honour of carrying the Olympic flame.

It was from his bed in St Gemma’s hospice in Leeds last week, that Ian Meek, urged the MARS. Radio team to use his torch to keep up the battle for more investment into brain tumour research. Ultimately, Ian’s goal was to fund specialist consultant’s to work on pioneering brain tumour research at the Leeds Institute for Molecular Medicine.
Carol Robertson, leader of Brain Tumour Research and Support in Yorkshire said:

“Ian has taught me so much about the human spirit and how to make every precious second count. He never moaned about the things he couldn’t do, he simply focused on the things he could. He had the following words on a tee shirt “When you are diagnosed with cancer, don’t think about the things you can’t do, dream and do the things you can”. Ian absolutely lived by these words.”

On the day of the Barnsley Town Hall clock tower climb, the student led MARS.Radio team will be joined by the Head of UCB Campus, Peter Birkby, staff and lecturers from the University, and numerous brain tumour victims and their families who wish to complete a leg of the relay.
