Story
Marine Capital Ltd. is competing in the Concern Worldwide London Triathlon Corporate Challenge! CEO Tony Foster, accountant Ke Chen and analyst Nina Kearsey will each complete one leg of the 2013 Virgin Active London Triathlon as part of MCL’s on-going fundraising efforts for the charity.
Concern Worldwide’s 2013 campaign forms part of their continued efforts to improve the education and nutrition given to children in schools in the Grand Bassa county of Liberia. The two civil wars in Liberia’s recent history destroyed an estimated 53 per cent of public and community schools, and education is now a key area of focus for the country as recognised in the Liberia Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper. With a young and rapidly expanding population, the poverty faced by many of the people of Liberia is being compounded. Literacy rates are low—only 44 per cent of 6-14 year olds attend school—, and the prevalence of food insecurity, chronic malnutrition and poor health among the population means that even those children who can attend school are often unable to learn.
Since June 2010 Concern Worldwide has been working with schools in District 2 of the Bassa County on projects such as teacher training, community and youth engagement to address the educational needs of school children in a holistic and sustainable way. Working through the Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) Concern Worldwide now wants to address the nutrition the students of these schools as a means of encouraging them to stay in school and allowing them to learn effectively. Concern Worldwide will be supporting 803 PTA members across 12 primary schools in the district to help improve agricultural skills and increase the production of locally available food. Improved nutrition awareness and practices among these PTA members will help to create the learning environment that these school children need, whilst also benefitting and empowering their wider communities.
