Story

Well here we go again – after the successes of the last two years in terms of extreme events to raise money for great causes, the Charity Fundraising team at MDA have been hard pushed to come up with something equally as formidable and demanding. Something that will test our nerve and our physical fitness, while at the same time allowing us to raise as much money as we can for our chosen charity.

Well we think we have come up with a suitable challenge. We have done Yorkshire and the Lake District – this year we’re heading into , or the Brecon Beacons to be more precise.

The challenge is called “Beating in the Beacons” and I think that probably sums up the event very well. It will be another 12 hour timed "gruelling" event and will consist of the following:

=> Canoe via the Monmouthshire and from Brecon to Talybont – approximately 11km

=> Mountain Bike off-road along a section of the popular Taff Trail from Talybont, including a very technical descent from the ‘Gap’ for at least 500m – approximately 25km

=> Then begins the infamous 'Para Challenge' which is get to the top of Pen Y Fan (the highest peak in the Brecons) within 50mins before descending by the old Roman road back to Cwm Gwdi – approximately 17km including about 800m of ascent!

=> Total distance ~ 53km – the furthest total distance that we have ever done as a group!!

Certainly not easy, but definitely achievable and another great event for the MDA team to take on. We are going to be running this challenge on Saturday11th September, when the air is a bit cooler, the ground is still dry and the river isn’t running too high!

This year we shall be raising money again for Demelza House (
www.http://demelza.org.uk), a truly amazing children's hospice in that continues to inspire us all with their wonderful care and bereavment support for time-limited children.

Just like last year we are asking you to back these mad fools and dig as deep as you can into your pockets and pledge some money to support our efforts. Anything will be gratefully received.

And just to provide a little incentive, we are giving every person that makes a donation the chance to enter a guess at our finishing time for completion of the entire challenge. The clock will stop when the last person in the team crosses the line, which is essentially when they get back to Cwm Gwdi. The person who estimates the nearest time will win a unique prize. Just enter your predicted time when you make your donation in the comment section - if you can try and come up with a unique time by checking which times have been taken already.

Finally, everyone who is part of the MDA team and all the staff at Demelza House would like to say a big thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a taxpayer. So please dig deep and donate now!!!!!
