In 2007 I went on an organised trek to Everest Base Camp with a Charity travel company and raised money for Show Racism the Red Card. I went with friends and colleagues and all but one of the group made it to Base Camp and we all had a wonderfull experience.
I enjoyed the trek to Everest so much that I decided to repeat it again in 2009, this time for the benefit of Guide Dogs for the Blind. We were a much smaller group and going at a different time of year added to the excitement of the trek and with the added benefit of knowing I was doing the trek for such a worthwhile cause made it an experience to remember.
Each Charity trek I have done I have always paid in full for my trip. This means that anything I raise will automatically go to the Charity in question.
So far I have done Charity Treks which involves an activity I enjoy with the bonus of raising money for a whorthwhile Charity. This year I plan to do the same but for more personal reason as explained below.
This year I have decided to do something a little different and am staying in England to do a trek across our fair land from West to East Coast. Two of us will be undertaking the Wainright Coast to Coast walk from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay, a total of 191miles which we have organised through a private company, unlike before and as usual will be paying for all eliments of the trip ourselves.
The reason I have chosen to support The British Heart Foundation is because earlier this month (Feb 2010) my brother had a massive heart attack at home. He was rushed to the local hospital for treatment. The treatment he was given from the moment the ambulance arrived at his house was exceptional. He was treated with kindness and dignity at the local hospital and also when transfered to Leicester for further treatment of a stent being inserted.
During the time of receiving medical care both he and the family were made to feel welcome and felt confident that the medical staff had everything under control and were always ready to answer questions and comforted when needed.
My borther is 47yrs old and we are all still shocked that at his age and fitness level that this could have happened to him without warning of any kind. This is a situation that none of us expected and although it has changed all our lives in many ways we are releived to know that the support needed by my brother will continue well into the future by the medical team involved.
Please donate anything you can afford to this fantastic Charity and join my family and I in thanking them for their research and treatment that helped save my brothers and others lives over the years.
