A choir festival on the remote shores of Lake Niassa  Music affects and works on all levels of development: social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth  After an enormous success in 2010, the Manda Wilderness Community Trust has decided to organise the second choir festival in the Manda Wilderness Area!  Location: a roofless, colonial-era stone church in Cobue, Niassa Provence,Northern Mozambique Project: Village Masterclasses and a Choir Festival Cost: Approx. £ 2.000,- Date: 3rd of June 2011   Objective    Due to the lack of infrastructure in this largely undeveloped region, villagers have few opportunities to travel and communicate with each other.  Preoccupied by laborious duties such as firewood collection and farming, the chance to mingle together, enjoy leisure time, and share talent is a rare occurrence.  A choir competition provides the invaluable opportunity for villagers to engage in such activities through a healthy, competitive, and artistic spirit.    Like most African cultures, music in the Niassa District of Mozambique is an integral part of life; each village has between one and three choirs organized through local churches.  However, the local people have had neither exposure to formal musical education nor a venue in which to perform their talents.  MWCT is therefore seeking funding to deliver musical training and organize a choir festival to share the joy of music across sixteen Nyanja villages.   Project Description   Village Masterclasses The masterclass sessions will provide basic musical education to one choir in each of the sixteen villages of the Manda Wilderness Community Conservation Area.   The sessions will be delivered in April and May with one day of musical training per village.  They will be administered by a volunteer trained in choral singing and musical education and a local translator.    Choir Festival The choir festival will take place on Friday the 3rd of June 2011 and will include sixteen villages.  Choirs will perform together in nearby Cobue, the local administrative centre, inside a roofless, colonial-era stone church.  Villages will select twenty of their best singers amongst existing Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Seventh Day Adventist choirs to enter the competition.  The performances will be evaluated by a table of 4-5 judges according to the judging rubric in appendix A Time and budget permitting, the festival may also include performances by local Malawian musical celebrities, a drum-off, and a dance-off.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music affects and works on all levels of development: social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth   What do grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, shopping malls, and automated phone systems have in common? Although no one can quite explain the reason why music has such an important role in our everyday lives, it does. Music inspires, soothes, excites, and bonds people of all ages and from all walks of life. Music affects and works on all levels of development: social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth.   Music and Social Interaction Music is a natural connection tool. It brings people together and helps them interact with one another. It is part of many social events.   Music and Emotional Development Music is associated with our earliest memories, and experiences throughout our lives. It definitely has an emotional impact.   Music and Physical Development You can't dance without music, right? Well, you can, but music makes it much more fun. Music and movement naturally go together. Music helps people to learn about rhythm, timing, orientation, and coordination.   Music and Cognitive Development Music affects learning abilities. It is known that music is linked to improved math, memory and reading skills.
