Women for Women - Central American Challenge · 1 November 2012 ·

Women for Women Events raise funds to support the work of Genesis Research Trust. Genesis Research Trust finances vital medical research into the causes and cures for conditions affecting women and babies. These include cancer, miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and brain damage.

Story

Nicky, Susie, Frances and  Joanna the MadBirdsOnBikes returned from Central America on the 14 November, having joined 75 other women to cycle 350 miles through Panama, Costa Rica and finishing in Granada, Nicaragua.   Despite 4:30am starts, cycling in 80+ degrees heat or tropical rainstorms and very few home comforts we all thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and learned to love ‘rice and beans’.   The countries were absolutely beautiful and the people always hospitable and welcoming.

With fantastic support from so many people, and of course, Wellington school, we have raised £17,000 for Genesis Research Trust, a charity founded by Professor Robert Winston, promoting science for the health of women and babies.  In total the trip raised £280,000 for the trust.  We were lucky enough to be joined by Professor Winston for a couple of days, although he didn’t do much cycling, he proved invaluable in lifting spirits and bolstering down tents in tropical winds!

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported us, either by sponsorship, buying raffle tickets or attending one of our events.
