Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Every year there are around 27,000 children born with, or who will develop, a disability. Since 1982, Brainwave has worked with families to deliver individual home based therapies and exercises to help children with disabilities reach their full potential.

There is no such thing as a typical Brainwave child; they have a range of disabilities including Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome, Development Delay and Autism. Families come to us for an Assessment, where we look at the whole family, devising a Programme uniquely tailored to that child to be undertaken at home. We work with the parents (and siblings when we can) to give them the skills they need to undertake the Programme and we provide a DVD of their exercises and any equipment required. We also help parents understand the needs of their child.

Together we set goals, from a child learning to feed themselves, walking, recognising numbers to forming sentences. Our attitude is ‘Let’s see what we can do’ rather than focusing on limitations. Usually, a family is on Programme around two years, returning to our Centres every six months where progress can be monitored and the Programme adjusted. By the love and dedication of the families, we can achieve some amazing results. 85% of families say we make a significant difference, meaning children living with greater independence.

Funds from the Brainwave Walk for Kids support the Therapy of children like Chase, a little boy who lives with his mother and father in Dulwich, London. Chase is 3 years old and has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, which impacts on his general development. Chase has been on Brainwave’s Programme of Therapy for a year and in that time his parents have already seen a significant improvement in his vision, movement, speech and he shows more interest in his environment.
