We help disadvantaged youth in poor areas to access our health and education programs

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. This has to be one of the strangest and/or craziest fundraising events Africaid has embarked on in order to raise money for its unique Whizzkids United programme which delivers HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment and support for youth worldwide through the medium of football.

Over 36 million women, children, men are infected with HIV/AIDS causing pain and misery not only to those infected but to their families and loved ones. Raising funds  necessary to support our work in South Africa, Ghana and Uganda whilst looking to assist in other African Countries is an on going challenge.

20 pounds sponsors a child through our life skills programme;peer education; world cup tournament and on-going access to our Health Academies (teen clinics - providing HIV testing, counselling, HIV treatment and support) both in South Africa and Ghana

10,000 pounds builds us a much needed extension to our clinic in Ghana

8,000 pounds buys a tractor for our new self sustaining - income generating project in Ghana

5,000 pounds sees the launch of WKU in a new country in desperate need of our programme eg Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, India..

Therefore, Myself - Marcus McGilvray, Founder & CEO of Africaid - WhizzKids United and WhizzKids United Supporter and good friend, Anthony 'Danny' Coxhead are embarking on an epic journey across three deserts, five mountain ranges and covering 10,000 miles competing in the Mongol Rally 2011.

We will be driving a 1,000cc Nissan Micra which we will donate to the Mongolian Govt through the Rally organisers on arrival - what's left of it!!!

As highlighted by the organisers, "The Mongol Rally poses risks to your health and your life. You will be driving many thousands of miles in parts of the world that are unfamiliar to you, which means your chances of being involved in a road accident or in any number of other health and life-threatening situations is significantly increased from your day to day life. In the 7 years of the Mongol Rally there have been several serious road traffic accidents. Sadly some individuals who undertook previous Mongol Rallies have been permanently injured, disabled or have even lost their life in such accidents. Should you be injured or harmed in some way, medical help might be hours away. Even then, the kind of medical help you may receive may differ vastly from the quality of medical care you would expect to find at home.....this adventure is certainly not a glorified holiday. It is an unsupported adventure and so by its very nature extremely risky. You really are on your own and you really are putting....your life at risk".

So why are we doing it? We believe that we need to do something different to raise funds. The Mongol Rally offers just that and it allows us the opportunity to raise the profile of our work and funds.

Please sponsor this epic journey. Tell your friends about it, contact us with any ideas you may have on vehicle, route, sponsors etc.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Many thanks Marcus & Danny
