Thanks for taking the time to visit Margaret's JustGiving page.

Margaret is a carrier of Alpha 1 and although she does not herself have any symptoms of the condition, she has much experience of respiratory conditions.  Her late husband, Richard (Dick to his friends and colleagues) died in 1995 at the age of 66.  He had suffered for many years from Emphysema which was thought to be due to smoking.  However, it transpires that he had Alpha 1 and so he was highly likely to have developed lung disease anyway.  In addition, Margaret has herself had lung cancer.  In fact, she was diagnosed with the most virulent type – Small Cell Lung Cancer – on her 71 birthday in July 2002.  The Oncologist indicated that at best, she was likely to survive for 18 months but on 25 July 2011, she will be celebrating her 80 birthday.  A small miracle that demonstrates what advances in medical science can do for people with serious health problems.

Margaret has decided that she would prefer not to receive birthday gifts but any donations to the Alpha 1 UK Support Group would be much appreciated, particularly as several members of the Carley family are known to be affected by this condition.
