During the summer of 2012 I will be one of the crew on “Edinburgh Inspiring Capital”, the Scottish boat taking part in the 11-12 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, sailing back from New York, via Nova Scotia, Derry/Londonderry and Holland to the UK.
All participants are encouraged to try to raise money for charity.

I had polio as a child and fortunately it has not caused me a problem. Yet it is a disease that should have been eradicated. However there are still those whose lives are affected and for whom the effects of polio are a daily challenge. Taking part in the 11-12 RTW Race is an opportunity, which my own experience of polio has not prevented, to raise money to help eradicate the disease.

There are only 4 countries where the wild poliovirus remains endemic so the world is nearly polio free.
In 1985 Rotary made the decision to immunize the world’s children against polio. Since then more than two billion children have been protected against polio. The number of polio cases has fallen from 350,000 a year to around 1,500 annually, a drop of 99.8%, preventing five million instances of child paralysis and 250,000 deaths. www.rotary.org/endpolio
