My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Team MJS's Justgiving page.

Here we go again!!! Having completed the Marie Curie Mount Sinai Trek in 2010 and the Marie Curie Great Wall of China Trek in September 2011 we are now looking forward to our next trek for the Marie Curie Hospice, Penarth - the Grand Canyon Trek which takes place in October 2012. This is likely to be our toughest trek yet - the Yanks like to do things properly don't they! This year we are happy to welcome a new member to our fund-raising team - our good friend, Mandy Farnham.

The money raised from the Grand Canyon Trek will help the Marie Curie Hospice Penarth continue to provide specialist care for people with cancer and life-limiting illnesses completely free of charge. Set on a cliff top with spectacular views over the Bristol Channel, this purpose-built hospice offers a modern approach to care with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The hospice has 30 in-patient beds and provides a wide range of day services, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, spiritual care and complementary therapies. Each year the doctors and nurses at the hospice care for more than 1,200 local patients and provide support to their families entirely free of charge. It costs over £4 million per year to run the Penarth hospice - this would not be possible without the support of people like yourselves as 70% of the funds required each year have to be raised by voluntary contributions which is not an easy task.

  • £20 pays for a Marie Curie Nurse for one hour in a patient’s home.

  • £35 buys a nurse’s uniform.

  • £130 would pay for a day’s attendance at a Day Therapy unit in a Marie Curie Hospice.

  • £180 pays for a full shift for a Marie Curie Nurse in a patient’s home.

  • £435 pays for the cost of caring for an in-patient in a Marie Curie Hospice for a day

So please support Team MJS in our third year of fund-raising for this special cause and help us raise much needed funds for this wonderful place.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Many, many thanks for your donation.
