Balkan Peak Challenge · 14 September 2019

We offer support to help people overcome any issue holding them back and provide this from those who know best - people who have been there themselves. Each generous pound raised for us goes towards helping people who have been locked out of society make positive changes to their lives.

Story

So as you may or may not know Scarlett and Marisa have decided to trek across the Balkans this September to raise money for our CS charity of the year St Giles Trust.

The trek which is rated 8 out of 10 for difficulty, will involve a week of tough hiking, steep ascents / descents and 9-10 hours of walking per day. We will also get to sample local delicacies along the way (creamy lamb intestines anyone?!), whilst staying in a range of accommodation, including guest houses, shepherds huts and wild camping (where we will be sharing the forest floor with bears and wolves...gulp!).

For Scarlett this will be a walk in the park considering she already has Everest Base camp, The Cho La pass, Kilimanjaro, Mt Kinabalu and 5,642,874  other mountains under her belt. Marisa on the other hand only realised last month that walking 2 minutes to the station every morning wasn't actually considered a hike. Needless to say we've been busy training over the last couple of weeks. This has involved shopping for the most fashionable hiking boots (do they even exist?!), formulating training plans over a bottle of chilled wine and generally questioning what on earth we've let ourselves in for!

So what are we actually doing?!?

We start our adventure in Albania summiting its tallest peak -Mount Korab (2751m). Located on the border between Albania and Macedonia, Korab sits in the Korab-Kortinik National Park. Next we head to the Republic of Kosovo where we climb Mount Gjeravica (2656m), its highest peak and the second highest in the Dinaric Alps range. After Kosovo we cross-border trek between Albania and Montenegro through a remote and wild landscape before finishing our adventure by summiting the highest point in Montenegro- Zla Kolata (2534m).

St Giles Trust

The aim of this trek is to raise funds and awareness for St Giles Trust; a charity who aim to empower young people to stay safe and make positive choices for their futures. 50,000 children in the UK are exploited by gangs every year, and St Giles Trust do fantastic work to educate children on the dangers of gangs, exploitation and knife crime. Nobody is exempt from the dangers of knife crime and street violence, no matter which city or area you live in. £8.34 can be saved by the taxpayer for every £1 invested  in peer-led services, so please donate generously!

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page, wish us luck!!
