Stirling Scottish Marathon 2017 · 21 May 2017 ·

Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.

Story

My dad was recently diagnosed with Parkinsons and I wanted to do my bit to support the charity, and also inspire him to keep going through his struggles.  During my youth, my dad was always my coach and did all he could to push me through my training and develop me as an athlete, and now it's my turn to keep him motivated and encourage him to keep active as he battles each day with his condition.  I am aware of his restrictions, but I know that a positive mindset and healthy lifestyle will put him in a better place to fight the symptoms.

On a personal level, I chose to do the Marathon as I wanted to inspire my dad by taking on a huge challenge, and also showing him that you can overcome adversity.  This, for me, relates to the fact that I had reconstructive knee surgery a few years ago, and questioned whether I would ever be able to complete such a physical endeavour.  I hope that the pride and motivation this will give him will help keep him going through the good days and bad.

I also chose to run in Stirling as it give me an opportunity to return to the place I spent 4 wonderful years as an undergraduate at the University.
