In partnership with local Zambians we are helping to build and develop community schools in the Copperbelt region for children, mainly orphans, who cannot otherwise afford to go to school. We build classrooms, employ teachers, cooks and a nurse, and our hope is that communities will be transformed.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am joining an extraordinary and inspiring initiative by Stuart Block, a teacher at Cranleigh, as he cycles from South Africa to London. Here is the cause in his words:

It is a charity tandem cycle journey from Cape Town to London, raising money for 4 charities: Beyond Ourselves, Right to Sight, Alive & Kicking & UNICEF, all doing amazing things in the world's poorest region and all focused on sustainability.

Beyond Ourselves are helping my school, Cranleigh in the UK, build a partnership with a community school in the Copperbelt region of Zambia. I'll be meeting some students from Cranleigh en route to help build classrooms. The gent in the photo runs the community school we'll be partnering. Amazingly, £30k is enough to build a basic school for 200 kids.

Right to Sight are doing amazing things helping eradicate preventable blindness in Africa. £20 is the cost of one cataract operation in Africa. ‘Stoking’ a tandem is one key bit of cardiovascular exercise that blind people can participate in but it would be cool if they could ride on the front too!

Alive and Kicking are a social enterprise that manufactures sports balls in Zambia & Kenya for children to play and creates jobs for adults. I hope to donate a set of their balls to each school I visit en route, with your help!

UNICEF is the world's leading organisation protecting the rights of children and young people. In particular, Beyond the bike is raising money for the legacy charity of the London Olympics which is working with UNICEF's sport for development programmes across the continent.

Please take a look at my website #mce_temp_url# for more detail.
