We fund life-changing and life-saving work to support cancer patients at The Christie

Story

I'm "running" the Manchester 10k again to raise money to help The Christie in the great work they do treating people like my late wife Sue and 1,000s like her living with cancer.

This year I'm not fit enough to RUN so I'm pushing my furry friend 'Linford the Christie bear' round in a wheelchair.

Sue was diagnosed with an incurable malignant brain tumour in October 2010. Following surgery, daily radiotherapy through the worst of the 2010 winter and then regular chemo sessions through 2011 she responded well and took  a 6 month break from treatment over the Winter of 2011-12.

The tumour started growing again, but, fortunately she responded well to further chemo and was doing well without treatment for over 12 months until October 2014 when her scan showed the tumour was growing again. She resumed chemo, but that didn't stop us getting out and about to concerts and for some memorable breaks in the Lake District. Unfortunately the chemo ceased to be effective in July 2015 and following a further short course of radiotherapy in August and September she passed away peacefully at home on 28th October.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her across many areas from teaching, scouting, cricket through my work and most of all as a mum to our fabulous two children.

If all hospitals could work the way The Christie do no-one would need to complain about the NHS, but it all costs and they need all the money we can give to help them treat, and hopefully cure even more people and we're grateful for all they were able to do to prolong Sue's life and to allow her to enjoy her last five years in reasonable health for most of the time.

Dan wrote a fabulous tribute to him mum ...

Just over 5 years later and the pain you've been suffering has finally stopped. To say I'm devastated would be an understatement, even though we knew, regrettably, this day was fast approaching. I can't believe it's over and you're gone.

I knew it would have to end eventually, but I hope we helped you enjoy the last few years through some dark times. I can only dream about what life would've been like had this never happened, but I wouldn't change how we lived the last 5 years despite what the illness did to you, not forgetting all the good times before the diagnosis.

I honestly could not have hoped for a better Mum to guide me through my childhood and early stages of adult life. I'll miss seeing you in the bed in corner of the living room every morning like I have for the last month, looking around at the world for someone to interact with, and whilst you may not have found it easy to communicate with us as time passed, a smile was all it took to make my day.

I'll always remember you as someone who spent your whole life helping other people, never expecting anything in return. You went above and beyond for me, and you made me who/ how I am today. I'm going to make sure that whatever the future holds, I make you proud.

Thanks to everyone who has helped my Dad, Hannah and myself over the last few years. We really can't thank you enough.

See you later SJ. I'll always love you. I'm proud to have called you my Mum x
