Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Just over 12 months ago I was diagnosed with Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma, a rare cancer of the Thyroid Gland. Shortly after diagnosis I had surgery to remove my Thyroid, 30 lymph nodes and as much affected tissue as possible from the surrounding area in my neck. Three months after this I had a course of Radio Beam Therapy to my neck to pacify residual disease. As I look forward a year on I am pleased to say that things are looking very positive and I have been signed off by the Docs for the next 12 months. Given the initial staging of the cancer this is a fantastic result. A month before I was diagnosed I made a promise to enter a white collar boxing match after watching a colleague in action last June. Although, inconveniently delayed this is now happening on September 17th 2011. I will be entering as a heavyweight into Judgement Day 7 ( www.rooneysgym.com ) in association with Rooney’s Gym. The contest is 3 x 2 minute rounds. I am a complete novice as of about 12 weeks ago but am training hard to put on a respectable performance. It would be great if you can make it along but if you can't, you can still support me by making a donation to my chosen charity.
The bottom line is I am lucky to be in this situation. I am taking to the ring to raise money for people who faught 10 times harder than me but still didn't get the result they needed. Sadly, there are many people in this situation but thankfully there are a number of charities dedicated to caring for people at home when their disease is terminal. Iain Rennie, Hospice at Home helped my friend Richard Morgan live out his last days in relative comfort and the support provided to Richard’s family was invaluable. Richard’s story inspired me to have a positive attitude towards everything I have had to deal with so I am asking for your help to raise some funds for this superb organisation in honour of his memory. Anything, large or small will be gratefully received!
Many thanks,
Mark.
