Why the Himalayas!!!

Unbelievably high, and with a beauty that defies description, the mountains of the Himalaya dominate northern Nepal. Seen from the air they hang confused among the clouds. Glimpsed from the Kathmandu Valley they form a remote horizon. From the foothills they tease beyond a maze of ridge crests. But from their moating glens they soar in ice-bound splender, dazzle their pristine snows and impose their charecter upon your dreams; once seen, never to be forgotten...

It is my aim to complete traditional Hindu and Budhist pilgrimage to the sacred Gossainkund Lake and raise some money for a very important charity at the same time.

To get to Gosainkund and back I will have to trek for three weeks through the Himalaya north of Kathmandu to the Tibetan border. Starting in the rhododendron and oak forrests of Langtang National Park I will be climbing the Langtang Valley to its upper reaches at the 4600m Laurabina Pass where I will ultimately hope to make it up into the 7000m peaks of the Ganesh Himal and the Annapurnas. The final decent will take in Therapati and the farmlands and villages of the Helambu region.

During the trek I am hoping to visit some of the sites that benefit from the ongoing support of Comunity Action Nepal. CAN's main goal is to bring long term benefits to the lives of the rural Nepalese population with it's main focus on sustainable health and education projects and working with the local people and village communities. Each project's aims are to be set up in complete partnership with with the local community and to then enable that community to develop the resources to further fund the project themselves. Ultimately CAN wish to encourage the rural Nepalese to remain in their mountain villages to sustainably preserve their traditional ways of life and so stem the influx of people into the ghettos of the capital city of Kathmandu.
