Fifty years of deadly civil war in South Sudan meant that children were forced to learn how to fire AK47s, run from helicopter gunships and recognise whether planes would drop food or bombs.  Childhood memories were not only of family and friendship, but also of people dying in times of famine and of endless journeys to escape the war.  Since the precarious peace of 2005, many refugees have returned to their home villages to share the precious education they received.  Marol Academy is the leading school of Gorgrial East, run by these returning heroes, and it hopes to support the education of the other 90,000 Apuk Dinka.  With the independence of South Sudan just weeks away, the children of this new land have never wanted to learn more.

Our journey to build a school can be followed on the blog at www.hart-uk.org.
