Thank you for taking the time to visit this page. On my birthday the 27th March 2011, of going for a nice meal or having a few drinks, I have made the bizarre decision the do a bungee jump off the transporter bridge in Middlesboro'. Why? To raise money and awareness for Motor Neurones Disease and for the North East MND Trust. For who are not aware of what MND is (me until recently)
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is the name given to a group of related diseases affecting the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurones are the nerve cells along which the brain sends instructions, in the form of electrical impulses, to the muscles.
Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles. This generally occurs in arms or legs initially, some groups of muscles being affected more than others.
MND is generally a steadily progressive disease, but the rate of progression varies greatly from one person to another. At present there is no conclusive evidence as to what causes MND and nor is there a cure, all you can no is to try to slow the progression by keeping your body as strong as you can and most importantly stay positive!!
Staying positive is where the NEMNDT and others MND charity are vital! One of my best friends was diagnosed around 2 years ago. He was an extremely active footballer and worked as a sports coach. Having MND means he now can’t be actively participate as a footballer and also despite a stubbornness and determination he eventually had to give up his job. All I/we can think off is if we developed MND how would we cope?? I personally know I wouldn’t, how could anyone?
Amazingly he is unbelievably positive and rather than accepting the inevitable and that his body is slowly shutting down, he is keeping an unbelievably positive outlook, trying everything he can to slow the progression of the disease, he is also trying the raise awareness of his condition and raising money whenever he can.
As well as having great support from his friends and family the support NEMNDT has offered has literally been invaluable! It’s for this reason I have chose to raise money for this charity is to help them continue to provide this support and helping MND victims cope with what is an awful situation. To find out more about the charity visit their site www.nemndt.co.uk.
Finally, for anyone that is thinking that I’m some sort of adrenaline junky that is doing something they enjoy and making some money for charity in the meantime, I’M NOT! I was the type of child that wouldn’t ride my BMX with no hands because it was too dangerous, I always stop, look & listen (twice) and find it a challenge to jump out of bed in the morning! I’m not that sure whether or not I’m scared of heights, but will probably find out in the near future! If you are still reading this and haven’t fell asleep reading my tripe: -
