Story

Dear Friends

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

As you know our holiday in Nepal was one of the most memorable trips we have ever had. Not only was it a trek in the most fantastic mountains and countryside but the people, though poor, were remarkable for their friendliness and generosity to us.

We want to do something to help them and if possible we would like you to help us. There is a school in Kathmandu called Samata School: it is also called The Bamboo School due to its building materials.  It helps orphans and children of underprivileged families, who would never in the normal way learn to read and write or to have any education. At present they have around 2500 pupils.

We shall be spending the last night of our holiday in April in Kathmandu and hope to visit the school and see it for ourselves. We did, but the Maoists had called the teachers out on strike on the day of our visit.

We saw the buildings without the children and that only went to emphasize how few resources they had. Compare these pictures above with the schools our children and grandchildren attend and you will realise why we HAVE to help.

After a long discussion with the Principal and Raj, who oversees the Saga projects in Nepal, it was decided that what was really needed was an out-of-school experience for the older ones. Our project will go to an outdoor adventure experience for the 14-15 year olds, teaching team building and leadership skills. Cooking, camping, raft building, hiking will happen amonst other things supervised by qualified instructors and they will have a fun learning experience quite different to anything they have done before. How I would love to be a fly on the wall, so to speak!

£20 will take 2 children for a unique week in their lives, so please give generously to help as many as possible to experience it. We are desperate to make it a success, then the Saga Charitable Trust may take it over as a yearly part of the curriculum in the school.

This project will run for one or two years and then be reviewed. Please help us: this experience will mean so much to these underprivileged children.

Saga's Charitable Trust have agreed that all the money we raise will go to our chosen project
