POST-EVENT UPDATE
I'm delighted to be able to let you all know that we completed the Coast to Coast challenge. it took us 21.5hours to complete the 193miles finishing 17th out of 30 overall and the 8th team across the line (out of 15).
Needless to say it was a fairly rigourous event. Day one started with a nice 3 mile beech run at 6.30am but the first cycling section of 67miles was tough due to a strong head wind throughout the entire route.
The 16 mile kayak section was manageable as it was mostly in canals, so it was predominately sheltered with only one big open water section to cross. That said, we were on the water for just over 4 hours so the arms were somewhat floppy by the end of it all.
Day one ended with a 10 mile cycling section, which we were able to complete at a good pace. After an overnight camp the second day commenced with a 76mile cycle which started off with both nice roads and weather conditions but after the half way point the road gained some altitude and we hit another tough head wind at the 70mile mark, which pushed us hard.
Rostrevor heralded the end of the cycling and we were happy to be getting off our bikes but worried as to how we would cope with the final 21 mile run section which included summiting Slieve Donard. We took our time at the start, found our running legs and soon got into a nice rhythm. Some 6 hours later we hit the home straight and finished on the promenade in Newcastle to our great relief.
In summary then, a very tough event but immensely satisfying with the achievement magnified many times by the fantastic generousity of all our sponsors which has seen the total raised to date exceed £2400.
Many thanks to all of you for your kind donations and particular mention must also be paid to our support crew - Peter Moore - for all his efforts over the weekend being in the right place at the right time, having food & drink ready, etc. We couldn't've done it without him.
PS There's a few pix below to give you a feel for the event although, despite many requests, none with tears or evident pain - sorry.
