Leeds Half Marathon 2018 · 13 May 2018 ·

We strive to build a resourceful community, through the power of education. We help young people go to school, stay healthy and achieve. We buy uniform & supplies, sponsor secondary pupils, run a library and resource centre, manage an orphans' feeding scheme & work closely with the primary school.

I am running the Leeds Half Marathon on Sunday May 13th in aid of Etatu, a charity based in a village in Kenya. One of Etatu’s main aims is to invest in girls’ education which significantly improves their prospects and quality of life.

Did you know that a girl with secondary schooling is 6 times less likely to be a child bride than one with little education; is half as likely to experience violence in her marriage; is 70% less likely to die in childbirth and has, on average, 2 fewer children?

Education also has an amazing impact on a girl’s family: a child whose mother can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five; an extra year of secondary school raises a woman’s eventual wages by 15-25%; and when she earns an income, she is likely to spend 90% of it on her family.

I am lucky enough to have stayed in Msambweni and have seen some of the wonderful work Etatu does, funding girls through primary and secondary school, providing lunches for orphans and building a banda, or community centre, for extra education and training for the whole village.
