For those of you who don't know me, I live in the Land DownUnder, Australia. So why would I be riding in the Prudential London-Surrey 100-mile bike ride.
My wife and I are lucky enough to be blessed with three beautiful children. My daughter entered the world a couple of weeks early, healthy and happy. My twin boys however had to struggle all the way. My wife endured a horrible pregnancy, with one complication following another. Six weeks before they were due, in the very early hours of the morning, one of the boys decided enough was enough and it was time to get out and start living. Being born so early, and due to other complications our boys were born by emergency caesarean weighing in at only 1.43Kg (3lb, 2oz) and 2.4Kg (5lb, 4oz). They then had to spend the next 31 days in a special care nursery hooked up to machines, being fed through tubes down their noses. Not really a pretty sight.
As most new Dad's will tell you, leaving the hospital each night is not too hard; you're on an adrenaline high (I don't think I slept for the first couple of days after each birth), I had my little girl to look after, and beside Mum was just down the hall, so everything was good. However come the day when my wife was discharged from hospital, the thought of leaving our boys effectively all alone chilled me to the bone. If it wasn't for the support of the special care nursery staff, who themselves were supported by an Australian organisation similar to Bliss, I'm not sure I could have made it out that door.
Our boys are now thriving 5-yr olds who started school this year and absolutely love it. We are forever grateful for the support that we received and take every opportunity to pay it back. This is the main reason I nominated to partake in this event. My hope is to raise awareness of Bliss, and similar organisations, so that they can garner much needed financial support. Believe me when I say, you can't put a price on the value of the services they provide.
My primary source of fund-raising is via the Holroyd City Lions Club, of which I am a member. They are supporting me strongly with an initial donation and the funds raised from two Sausage Sizzle events. A very big thank you to the members of the club for supporting me in this event.
I wouldn't be able to travel all the way to be in this event if it wasn't for the generous assistance provided by my employer, Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group. The Marshall Group (headquartered in Cambridge UK) have chosen Bliss as their corporate charity for this year are aiming to raise £50,000.
If you would also like to sponsor me in this event, no matter how big or small, the money you provide will be money very well spent.
Thanks for taking the time to read my burst, and an extra big thanks if you are able to sponsor me.
