Story
I've been interviewing homeless people in Brighton for the last couple of weeks; asking them to share individual stories about their first day sleeping rough, and what could be done to make getting help easier in those first few critical hours. As a sign of solidarity to the kind people I've met so far - and to get a vague feeling for how hard their situations are - it seemed only logical to experience it properly. So, my editor and I will be living rough for 24 hours next Saturday (12pm to 12pm) with only the realistic items a person in that situation would have as they settled down for their first night on the streets.
The Clock Tower Sanctuary, a day centre for 16 to 25 year olds, is now helping about 120 people a month, a huge rise from the the 40 people a month they were helping two years ago. That’s an awful lot of people who are having to experience that first 24hrs.
Unfortunately, unlike Kyle and myself, they don’t get to finish at midday.
We won’t be seeking charity whilst on the street. However, we will have the budget an average homeless person would make in 24 hours by doing this.
Any donations you give will go to The Clock Tower Sanctuary and if you could share this amongst your friends that’d be wholeheartedly appreciated.
