MapAction Chiltern Challenge · 6 July 2012 to 8 July 2012 ·

MapAction believes that applying geospatial expertise to humanitarian situations can greatly improve outcomes for the people affected. Global humanitarian needs outstrip resources. Expert geospatial and data analysis can help stretch those resources for maximum impact. Many professionals want to donate their energy and skills to help. MapAction is the bridge which enables them to do so effectively. We are a non-profit organisation that collaborates with partners around the world to help anticipate, prepare for and respond to humanitarian emergencies. We strive to ensure governments, regional and local disaster management agencies and humanitarian responders have access to the information and analysis that they need to make key decisions, at the right times, to save lives and alleviate suffering. We are a team of around 100 people, 75% of them expert volunteers, plus a small roster of standby consultants. Combining the passion of volunteerism with the rigour and reliability of professional standards, the ‘MapAction spirit’ is something we work hard to maintain and the willingness of our team to go the extra mile is often fed back to us.

Story

Update: Despite the weather we all got round. It was really wet for the first two days - lots of floods and mud, but the sun did grace us with it's presence on Sunday. We also found out that the Chilterns are remarkably hilly!

This year's cycling event is the Chiltern's cycleway and all donations will go towards MapAction, who this year will have been disaster mapping for 10 years.

The ride is a 170 miles or so of ups and downs (both natural and mental). As it happens it goes passed the current MapAction office at Saunderton and the old office at Little Missenden. On Friday 7th July we 23 of us will begin.

MapAction works in disaster zones all over the world, creating regularly updated situational maps that allow other NGOs and the UN to make crucial decisions on getting aid to those who need it.

MapAction have deployed to 36 different emergencies and are increasingly called upon, with our 6 emergency, of the year, to flooding in Paraguay just underway. I deployed to Brazzaville in March following a munitions depot explosion and have seen how maps make a difference first hand.

All donations, no matter how big or small, really make the difference.

Thank You
