Trek Jordan · 13 October 2011

We’re here for deaf children and everyone who cares about them. We empower families to connect and drive change in their communities, and we campaign to make sure deaf children get the support they need. We lead the way, sharing insight and knowledge in the UK and internationally.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We (Matt & Ursula) have decided to team up to raise much needed funds for the NDCS by doing a 3 day trek in the Jordanian Desert in October 2011.

Ursula- I trekked China back in 2005 but was forced to take a break to have 2 more children! I hold a BSL qualification and have been teaching signing classes to children while being unable to trek and looking after my little ones.

I am very excited to be able do this new challenge. I may have metal pins holding my spine together but that certainly isn't going to stop me!

Matt- I've never done a charity trek before due to age restrictions, but did a Charity Sky-Dive in 2009 raising over £1000 for GOSH. I hope this will be the first of many international charity challenges that I will participate in and aim to raise as much money as possible for this very worthy charity.

Did you know?

- Four babies are born deaf every day in the UK

- 90% of deaf children are born to families with no experience of deafness

- Deaf children are 60% more likely to suffer from mental health problems than other children

- Without the right support, deaf children and young people are vulnerable to isolation, abuse, bullying, low self-esteem, and poor levels of achievement

- Over 95% of NDCS' work is funded by the public- they need to raise £173,000 every week to provide all of their services to those that need them

What will your money do?

- Your donations will go towards the extraordinary work done by the NDCS- providing equipment to deaf children and their families, expanding access to learning BSL (british sign language) and enabling deaf children and young people to live a life as close to normal as possible.

- £250 will give a deaf child an opportunity to develop their independence and self-confidence by taking part in an Activity Weekend

- £1,000 enables one family with a deaf child to attend an NDCS Family Weekend where they can share experiences with other parents and get information from professionals

- £5,000 provides 250 parents of newly identified deaf children with 'Communication bags' containing bright, visual aids to help parents communicate with their deaf child

The NDCS need all the help they can get to reach their weekly £173,000 target so please, help us to help them by donating whatever you can and sharing this page with friends. In the famous words of Tesco 'Every Little Helps'.

Thanks,

Matt and Ursula
