Story

On 8 March 2013 it will be 30 years since my open heart surgery at Red Cross War Memorial Children's hospital in Cape Town. To mark this personal milestone and to raise funds and pay tribute to the hospital that saved my life, I am riding the Cape Argus cycle tour which runs 109km around the beautiful Cape peninsula on 10 March 2013.

Fast facts:

1. The Argus cycle race was inaugurated the year I was born: 1978.

2. Before the operation, I could barely run due to the low amount of oxygen in my blood.

3. People with Atrial Septal Defects now have keyhole surgery to fix a hole, obviating the need for open heart surgery.

Please support the Red Cross children's hospital by donating through JustGiving which is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate.

Thank you!

Great news! As of this morning, we broke the £1000 barrier! Also, the Children's Hospital Trust has just emailed me to say that the total raised by all the fundraisers for this event has tipped over R400,000. A fantastic achievement by all! Thank you.

I've added a few photos of me riding the Argus at various points through the race. The "X-ray" cycling shirt I'm wearing was very kindly given to me by the Red Cross Trust. It was themed to symbolise the fundraising effort for the children's radiology department.

Thanks to every one for their wonderful support! I aimed for sub-4 hours and made it by 28 seconds! More importantly, we smashed the donation target of £655, surpassing £900 today! Wonderful stuff!

20/03/13 16:52

As of 3:22pm this afternoon, we hit the target of £655!!! Thanks to every one for their tremendous support! It has been so wonderful to see such warm and generous gifts and comments. I will visit the hospital on Saturday for a "carb-fest" and relay the fantastic news!

06/03/13 14:07

As some of you have asked, the reason my target is £655 is because the original bill for the operation was R655 and pounds are stronger than rands now... Serendipitously, my sister-in-law works at this very hospital now and found the original invoice! See latest photo added.
