After a quiet life, I have now reached the grand old age of fifty and I reckon its about time I took some risks..
I was recently asked by a friend if I wanted to participate in a tandem parachute jump for charity – never one to shy away from a challenge and having never parachuted, I agreed. Unfortunately, 2 days later I bumped into another friend of mine who happens to run the Combined Service Parachute School at Netheravon to whom I revealed my plans. He asked me really if I did want to do the “fairground ride” as he called it, when I could jump out on my own from 13,000 feet, free fall for 45 seconds at 120 mph and do it all myself…He and another instructor would jump with me and encouragingly he told me that if I “froze” he would catch me up and pull my toggle himself! (This is from someone who nearly killed himself two years ago when he got caught in a strap leaving him dangling off the back of a plane in mid air..so I am confident…) So hey ho, here we go… I had to pass a medical which to the surprise of many I have done, and I have selected a charity for a very special reason. Recently, a very close friend of ours was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Her treatment is progressing well and she is being amazingly brave and we are all confident that she will fight this scare. I has spoken with her and warned her of my exploits and together we have chosen the Beating Bowel Cancer charity. (www.beatingbowelcancer.org). Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK but in 90% of cases it can be successfully treated if diagnosed in time. The specialists do amazing work these days and it is through such charities that the work they do and the support for sufferers continues. If you feel you can support the charity (not me, I am just the fool who is going to fall out of a plane) then I would be eternally grateful. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity. So please dig deep and donate now!
